But as a founder deeply entrenched in the world of cybersecurity and sovereign AI, I have to ask the uncomfortable question: What if this magic trick is secretly charging us a price we aren't seeing on the invoice?

There is a scene in The Office where Kevin Malone famously decides to save time by cutting out words: "Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?" It’s funny on TV. It’s less funny when it becomes a metaphor for our cognitive decline in the business world.

The MIT Bombshell: Introducing "Cognitive Debt"

I recently dove into a 206-page research paper from MIT titled “Your Brain on ChatGPT.” The findings are startling for anyone who relies on their brain to make living—which, I assume, includes every CISO and CEO reading this.

The researchers found that when people constantly use AI for tasks they are capable of doing themselves, they significantly reduce brain activity in the areas responsible for those tasks. They coined a term for this that sounds eerily familiar to those of us in tech: Cognitive Debt.

We all know technical debt—the cost of choosing an easy solution now instead of using a better approach that would take longer. Cognitive debt works the same way, but the currency is your neural connectivity.


How The Study Worked

To understand the severity of this, we have to look at how the data was collected. This wasn't just a survey; it involved EEG brain scans. Participants were split into three groups:

  1. The LLM Group: Used ChatGPT.

  2. The Search Engine Group: Used Google.

  3. The Brain-Only Group: Used no external digital tools.

They performed writing tasks, like analyzing philosophical prompts. The results were undeniable. The Brain-only group showed the strongest and widest-ranging neural networks. The Search Engine group showed intermediate engagement. The LLM group? They had the weakest brain activity.


The Interest Rate on Mental Shortcuts

Think of it this way: Every time you take an AI shortcut for critical thinking (not just administrative drudgery), you are pulling out a mental credit card.

At first, it’s just a small convenience. A tiny credit. You let the AI summarize the report instead of reading it. You let the AI draft the strategy document. But these credits accumulate.

The study showed that this "laziness" persists. When the LLM group was forced to stop using AI in the final phase of the experiment, their brains remained under-engaged. They had lost the momentum of critical thought.

Even worse, 83.3% of the LLM group failed to provide a correct quote from the essay they had just written. Compare that to only 11.1% in the other groups. They didn't just outsource the writing; they outsourced the comprehension.

In a business context, this is terrifying. If your team creates a strategy using AI but cannot recall the details or defend the logic because they didn't actually "think" it through, you don't have a strategy. You have a hallucination.


The Sovereign AI Approach: Co-Pilot, Not Autopilot

The MIT paper’s FAQ explicitly advises against using words like "brain rot" to describe their findings, so I won’t go that far. But the warning is clear: Efficiency cannot come at the cost of capability.

As leaders, we need to foster a culture where AI is used to handle the mundane, freeing us up for "high-calorie" cognitive tasks—not a culture where we outsource our critical thinking to an algorithm.
